Education Association of Leicester Educator Fund (Fall Award)
10/26/10

Earlier this school year I was able to upgrade some old cross country ski equipment that will be used by students at Leicester High and Middle Schools.  The funds allowed for 12 pairs of skis to be modified with new binds along with boots, of various sizes that fit these modern bindings.  This will cover about half of the students in each class.  I am looking for additional money to enhance this program so that our students are given a chance to experience outdoor winter activities.  I have three more pairs of skis that need upgrading, and I would like to purchase ten pairs of snowshoes.  This program would reinforce and expand the Winter Physical Education Program at Leicester Public Schools, starting at Primary School and finishing at the High School.

Each year the EAL gives out grants in the fall and spring for up to $500.  The goal is to fund special projects, trips or activities for our students that may not be budgeted.  Please be reminded that the grant cannot fund bus transportation costs or new textbooks.  We have had some great applications in the past and  look forward to your ideas for this fall.
Please see attached file if you would like to apply.

EAL Member: Kelly Pilon
School: Leicester Middle School
Amount granted by EAL in 2009: $200.00
Activities I will use the grant for:

Each year I have all of my students participate in a Grow lab project, beginning in mid March and continue through the end of the school year.  I also maintain a fish tank for students to assist with in the classroom.  For the Grow lab project, I provide a variety of seeds for students to choose from:  vegetables, herbs and flowers.   I also bring in plant cuttings and root vegetables to experiment with and grow.  Students learn about life sciences and environmental science through various experiments and activities that we do.  Students learn how to care for plants and document the watering, germination and measurement of their plants’ growth in Plant Journals.  We transplant seedlings to larger pots as they grow, and eventually they take them home to plant them in their yards or gardens.  For the past few years, I have purchased all materials for this project on my own.  Materials include: potting soil, seeds, containers, and the grow lab light bulb.  The Grow lab itself I made years ago.  It is a stand made from pvc pipes and chain suspends a metal florescent light above seed containers.   I was trained in the curriculum that I teach, called, Grow lab: Activities for Growing Minds, published by the National Gardening Association.  The fish tank project is a 10 g. tank I have in the classroom that we care for during the school year.  I purchase the fish and/or tadpoles, and the fish food.  Students take turns feeding the fish, observe and learn to maintain the conditions needed to thrive. Students help in changing filters and keeping the tank clean and balanced.  These are the projects I will spend the EAL grant on.  I am very thankful to the EAL grant panel for choosing to help fund my teaching activities this year.

Secret Santa Program
9/30/2009

I know that it is so very early to start thinking about the holidays, but they will be here before we know it. Over the last three years the Education Association of Leicester has joined forces with the Leicester Fire Department and Leicester Police Alliance (AKA: LPFT Secret Santa Program) to help needy families with the Secret Santa Program.  This is a non profit, strictly volunteer program designed to help Leicester families in need of assistance with gifts and food for the holidays. As the Secret Santa Coordinator, I have worked closely with the three departments, along with many volunteers to try to raise monies and obtain toy donations for the program.  Some of the money raising efforts include the October Boot Drive and Meat Raffle through the Fire Dept., the High School Penny Drive, among other activities.

Please email me if you are interested in serving as the EAL Secret Santa Coordinator.  Leicester is a wonderful community to be a part of and it is only through the generosity of our community that we can continue the Secret Santa Organization.

Third Annual EAL Recognition Night

On behalf of the banquet committee, I would like to thank Paul Soojian (Superintendent of Schools), Tom O’Neill form Senator Moore’s office, State Representative John Binienda, Candace Aselton, Doris Whitworth (Primary School Principal), Greg Martineau (Memorial School Principal), Maureen Ferguson (SPED Director-Westborough Public Schools), and Kelley Southwick (E.A.L. President) for their efforts in making last night a memorable one for our honored guests.  I hope that everyone had a great time!  I certainly did.  It’s important that we get together like this, at least once a year.  It’s also important that we commemorate our colleagues’ accomplishments and careers, particularly when they come to a close.  Congratulations to Janet Richardson, Debbie Milosh, Debbie Early, Richard Doyle, and Rosa Todd.

UPDATE
Money Raised: $1987.56
On behalf of the Leicester Police, Firefighters and Teachers Secret Santa, I want to thank all of those who have donated, shopped and extended an "extra helping hand" to help all the families in need in our community this holiday season.  The fund raising efforts and numerous donations have helped to provide gifts to about 112 children this holiday season.  We would also like to thank those who "adopted" a family and bought gifts for particular families. Thank you!

PS A very special thank you to Maureen Doyle and Gigi Provost, who were the early morning "shoppers' for many weeks fulfilling Wish Lists items for families. Also, a very special thank you to Carl, Doris and Adam for transporting the gifts from the Town Hall and allowing storage at Primary school  for distribution.

Secret Santa Boot Drive Essay Winner

Thursday, September 8, 2008

On behalf of the Leicester Police, Firefighters and Teachers Secret Santa, I submitted an essay and won a Lemonade Stand from WSRS radio station for our organization.  The contest was to submit a letter outlining your charitable organization and why you think you should win a lemonade stand for your charity. The letter that I submitted detailed the SS program and explained how we helped many Leicester families last year at the holidays with a little less stress and many more smiles. I also stated that I would like to involve the students from the Middle and High Schools to help sell lemonade at our town events.  I think the students who volunteer to help will truly feel great about themselves that they were able to contribute to others who are less fortunate.
